At least 200 shanties were gutted as a massive fire tore through a slum in the capital’s Rupnagar area on Wednesday morning.
No casualty was reported.
Duty Officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Russel Shikdar said, the fire originated at a shanty of Rupnagar slum at around 9:45am and it engulfed adjoining areas.
On information, 25 firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire around 12:30 pm.
The authorities could not immediately determine the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.
Abul Kalam Ajad, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rupnagar Police Station, confirmed the incident to media.
It comes after two separate fires gutted the Chalantika slum in the space of five months between August last year and January this year.
